This chapter argues that, because literary fiction brings our attention to its saying and the “how” of its saying rather than simply to what is said, it brings out the nature and working of meaning or sense in their own right, separately from the things whose sense it is. In this way, it shows and allows us to grasp something fundamental about the world whose sense it is. This necessarily largely includes the non-fictional world. Because this increased understanding is that of the meaning of the relevant aspects of the world, it consists in a deeper grasp of the basic nature of the realities involved. In other words, the transparently invented story world we enter is at the same time both distinctively detached from real life and yet, exactly in that form of detachment, connected especially deeply with that reality. This world’s being detached in this particular way makes it both a safely unreal charmed world and one whose charm is in fact an aspect of the depths of reality itself.

摘要
