The empirical and local scope of this book puts into perspective some dominant common places in the research on the politics of memory of Spain’s transition to democracy. At least at the local level the thesis of a pact of silence does not apply. Instead, not only streets named after Franco and other agents of the national front were changed, but also memorials were built honouring the Second Spanish Republic. Asking how this was possible contributes to a better understanding of one of the main fundament of the Spanish transition, namely the capacity to assume a political and cultural renewal within the constraints of national reconciliation and consensus. Although not being able to extrapolate the results of this case study, the case of Madrid shows that the cities were pivotal motors of democratisation during the transition period, being often ahead of national politics.
