This chapter establishes the theoretical and methodological pillars of this study, exploring the significance of memorials in urban spaces. It draws on the relevant theory in urban and memory studies to develop concepts that bring together commemorative practices in the urban space and collective memory. Although the importance of memorials for the understanding of collective identity constructions has long been discussed in theory, only few studies have emerged that suggest concrete methods for approaching memorials from the perspective of cultural memory studies. This chapter therefore develops methodological tools that make it possible to analyse memorials as a political and social practice of reconnecting with the past.

摘要

This chapter establishes the theoretical and methodological pillars of this study, exploring the significance of memorials in urban spaces. It draws on the relevant theory in urban and memory studies to develop concepts that bring together commemorative practices in the urban space and collective memory. Although the importance of memorials for the understanding of collective identity constructions has long been discussed in theory, only few studies have emerged that suggest concrete methods for approaching memorials from the perspective of cultural memory studies. This chapter therefore develops methodological tools that make it possible to analyse memorials as a political and social practice of reconnecting with the past.
