Within the context of Great Power Competition (GPC), this chapter argues that the U.S.A. should consider Latin America and the Caribbean as a strategic battleground for influence. Chinese influence in Latin America and the Caribbean continues to expand given its Belt and Road Initiative, deepening trade ties, and enhanced ability to achieve diplomatic conformity in multilateral forums and institutions. Chile is no exception to such influence and serves as a case study for analyzing how hegemonic powers compete for strategic alignment as a means to impact global governance. Facets of governance like security, growth, and equity provide a framework for identifying such impacts while illuminating how the U.S.A. may enhance its advantage in GPC and preserve international rules-based behavior. To better achieve Integrated Deterrence (security), the U.S.A. should strengthen regional prosperity (growth) while deliberately focusing on economic sectors that divert trade (equity) from competitors and support integrated objectives across Departments.
