This paper examines the intersection of art and activism in the work of Otros Dreams en Acción (ODA). This grassroots organization advocates for the rights of deported and returned migrants in Mexico. The study is based on research conducted between 2019 and 2022, utilizing digital ethnography to analyze ODA’s organizational strategies, cultural initiatives, and use of digital media. Initially intended as a traditional ethnographic study, the research transitioned to an “onlife” approach due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, integrating online and offline methodologies. This study investigates ODA’s role as a social movement organization that constructs collective identities through cultural performance and advocacy through a comprehensive content analysis of audiovisual materials, interviews, reports, and social media artifacts. Drawing on concepts from social movement theory, the research identifies key components of ODA’s work, including collective action, transnational solidarity, and artistic activism. Key initiatives, such as the “Artists in Residence” project and the “Florecer Aquí y Allá” festival, exemplify the organization’s commitment to using art as a tool for social transformation. This paper highlights ODA’s ability to foster political engagement, redefine migrant narratives, and create inclusive spaces for returned migrants through creative and activist practices.
