Navigating Corporate Governance in the Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities in the MENA Region

The rapid advancements in technology, particularly the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), have dramatically transformed the global economic landscape and is significantly impacting social orders and organizations. How organizations react to this affect may ultimately impact their competitiveness indices. To this setting, the board of executives can play a significant part in making a difference in the organization by adjusting to the advancing scene of digital inclusivity in corporate governance. Is this already happening? Is this limited to the large corporates or are they lagging as a result of red-tape and the inability to adapt? Are the unicorns far better in their adoption of digital transformative process within their corporate governance or does their size and scope limit them. This paper aims to unearth answers to these questions, study the relevance of digitization towards the improvement of corporate governance and transparency, the challenges and opportunities that the digital transformation of corporate governance poses, all with reference to the MENA region. This research is driven by certain unique factors of the MENA region, the presence of highly concentrated ownership, the significant government involvement in publicly traded companies and the recently observed swift growth of the stock market alongside the improvement in investor protection measures. The findings suggest a variety in the quality of governance across different countries in the region and the established organizations therein. It has been established that there exists a beneficial link between governance quality and company performance and it becomes more pronounced at lower levels of concentrated ownership.
