The Sex Life of the Peasant Population Versus Christian Norms and Canon Law in Late Medieval Poland
摘要
The adoption of the Christian religion by the sovereign of a country such as Poland, and even the consequent christening of its inhabitants leading to a promulgation of Christian faith among its people, does not mean that past beliefs and pagan ceremonies were immediately abandoned. Norms of proceedings within social and family life, both of which include sex life, were kept even more intensively than faith in the old deities. Behaviour and proceeding paradigms that were accepted by a majority of society were certainly created earlier in the tribal period. However, the sexual sphere of human life was also taboo, which made it difficult to subject it to legal and social regulation in its entirety. Moreover, its connection to fertility and procreation meant that it was an aspect of life desirable to control, being seen on the verge of real and supernatural life. Thus, many magical rituals concerning sexuality and fertility emerged during early Christianity in Poland.
