The introduction contextualises literary autobiography with regard to life writing scholarship, contemporary literature and postmodernism, the literary history of autobiography and the novel, and the scholarly discourses surrounding Coetzee, Roth, and Grass individually. It situates the aesthetic and ethical questions surrounding autobiographical writing that uses fictionality at the intersection of these different but related critical discourses and directions.
