Oat (Avena sativa L.), commonly known as wild oats, belongs to the family Poaceae. This genus is characterized by variable ploidy levels with a main chromosome number of x = 7. Oat is one of the most cultivated cereal crops in the world. Historically, oat production mainly focused on the animal food market. Due to its composition rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, oat is considered a crucial part of the human diet and has gained a good reputation as a healthy and nutritious food. This crop represents significant genetic resources with ecological and agricultural importance. In recent years, the genus Avena, particularly Avena sativa, has been suffering from a loss of diversity and severe genetic erosion. Threatening the remaining germplasm. This chapter highlights the cultural value and contributions of the genus Avena to biodiversity. It also analyzes existing conservation strategies employed to preserve A. sativa genetic diversity, including “ex-situ” and “in situ” conservation methods, germplasm banks, and the use of molecular tools for precision breeding. The challenges of plant breeding lie in improving all traits of interest in order to produce varieties with no risk to consumers or the environment. However, numerous challenges hinder effective conservation efforts, including habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and socio-economic factors. Oat cultivation practices have evolved to accommodate changing agricultural landscapes and demands. Innovative approaches are being adopted in crop research. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative conservation approaches to ensure the long-term survival and sustainable use of A. sativa resources.
