Pierre (Pongamia pinnata L.), also known as Karanj, a versatile tree species belonging to Fabaceae, is globally recognized for a wide range of applications like biodiesel production and presents immense potential in soil fertility enhancement, medicinal applications and the textile industry. This chapter delves into the imperative exploration of molecular-level genetic diversity in P. pinnata, a critical prerequisite for sustainable biodiesel production, for excellent fuel properties. Identifying Candidate Plus Trees (CPTs) is highlighted as essential for successful breeding programs. The distribution of P. pinnata spans tropical and temperate regions of Asia, emphasizing its adaptability to diverse agroclimatic conditions. The species thrives in humid ecosystems near water bodies, exhibiting resilience to adverse climatic conditions. Genetic diversity analysis provides insights into climate preferences and biodiversity hotspots, crucial for sustainable utilization. Beyond biodiesel production, this chapter explores P. pinnata ecological adaptability, genetics, reproductive biology, physiological attributes, and cultivation practices. Nanopesticide formulations enhance its efficacy and target specificity.
