Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of Metal-Environment Interface

A theoretical review on the determination of the yield strength of metals has been completed. An experimental technique that allows to study the regularities of contact deformation in the process of kinetic macroindentation was presented. Using the X-ray structural analysis method, residual stresses were determined in samples of titanium alloy VT3-1 after various types of surface treatment. The relationship between residual stresses, Young’s modulus, and activation volume, which were determined using the kinetic indentation technique, was established. The values of the activation volume of titanium alloy samples, determined using the developed method, make it possible to explain the structural changes that occur as a result of various types of surface treatment.
