The University of Kelaniya (UOK) is ranked number one among Sri Lankan higher education institutes in the UI GreenMetric World University ranking 2022. Our journey began with the UOK adopting an environmental policy in 2014, becoming the first government university in Sri Lanka to pledge its commitment to sustainable development. Since then, UOK’s actions have been aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, education, responsible University operations, and community engagements. UOK has enabled a research culture that thrives on interdisciplinary collaborations to promote SDG-related research, with SDG 3 being the strongest. UOK’s educational commitment is seamlessly integrated into its academic fabric through multiple sustainability-related degree programs, course units, and field activities. Our sustainability operations include policies and processes addressing, inclusivity, disability, and racial equality, responsible resource consumption, energy, and water management plans, investments in solar energy, multiple recycling programs, biogas production, green procurements, chemical, clinical and e-waste management programs, rainwater harvesting, compost production, and food security. UOK’s community outreach programs encompass diverse activities from beach cleanup programs to community educational programs to health camps. Through this collective effort, UOK is transforming tomorrow by changing the way we contribute to sustainable development today.
