Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for UKM’s Green Campus
摘要
The establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) has accelerated the worldwide pursuit of sustainable development. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is committed to support the UN SDGs by developing a resource efficient and climate resilient campus. A roadmap that outlines the key elements for achieving decarbonised campus has been established in the UKM’s sustainability plan 2030 and 2050. The roadmap highlights the innovative and best practices of UKM towards managing six key indicators in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking concerning energy & climate change, waste management, transportation, water usage, setting & infrastructure as well as education & research. The UKM’s Sustainability Plan that was launched in 2022 aims to create a green, sustainable and prosperous campus through UKM’s commitment to energy saving programs, exploration of the latest energy, more efficient solid waste management and create modules, databases and policies that support universal efforts on the SDGs. In addition, UKM has taken on a crucial role in assisting to achieve those objectives by embracing the idea of a “Green Campus,” which includes a variety of programmes, rules, and procedures designed to lessen negative effects on the environment, conserve resources, and promote a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff. This chapter provides UKM’s dedication to setting sustainable goals and the role in creating a society that is more just, environmentally sensitive, and socially responsible. The commitment of UKM covers a wide range of areas, including partnerships, community participation, campus operations, research, and education. UKM is embracing integrative research projects, sustainability-focused curricula, and cutting-edge technology to address the SDGs’ many complex concerns. UKM generates opportunities for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and cooperative problem-solving to address urgent sustainability concerns by forming strategic relationships with regional communities, businesses, governments, and non-governmental organisations. In this chapter, we highlight the initiatives of UKM to achieve transformational change and encourage the next generation of leaders to embrace sustainability as a basic component of their professional and personal life as they are key stakeholders in the sustainable development agenda. It also provides helpful guidance on how to establish a net-zero-carbon campus that involves users from numerous disciplines.
