Humanity’s challenges today are unique in scope and scale, and education plays a significant role in delivering sustainable goals through the formation of leaders and responsible citizenship for the future. Higher education institutions stand confident in becoming the most decisive element in this change by giving students crucial skill sets and values to confront complex global issues. The Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT) launched a new initiative called “VIDA UAT,” designed to foster student involvement in sustainable practices and the skills to build sustainable citizenship. VIDA UAT has six core areas: UAT U-nido, CORRE UAT—Culture and Arts, CORRE UAT—Sports, UAT Innova, UAT Sustentable, and Second Language. Each area offers a variety of activities, such as innovation workshops, mental and physical well-being therapies, community engagement projects, and environmental literacy. This study used a quantitative approach by assessing the pilot stage of VIDA UAT, specifically focusing on participation percentages and competency development vis-a-vis cross-reference with Inner Development Goals. The results show that adequately structured extracurricular programs such as VIDA UAT facilitate students’ cognitive, social, and emotional growth without realizing it. Following the road toward sustainable development, VIDA UAT provides a replicable model for the comprehensive growth of socially responsible and socially aware students to tackle sustainability challenges better.
