Since its establishment in 1992, Mersin University (MEU) has positioned itself as a leader in sustainability through its research, education, and community engagement initiatives. This chapter critically evaluates MEU’s strategic efforts, including solar energy installations, greywater recycling, and the implementation of a comprehensive “Zero Waste” program, aimed at reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and minimizing waste. In addition, MEU has expanded green spaces per capita and integrated sustainability principles into its academic curricula, enhancing awareness and engagement among students and staff. These initiatives underscore MEU’s commitment to aligning its operations with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a result of these efforts, MEU has made significant advancements in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, improving from 406th globally in 2020 to 319th in 2023 out of 1182 institutions. Nationally, MEU ranked 31st among Turkish universities in 2023. These achievements demonstrate the university’s progress toward its sustainability objectives. However, challenges remain, including scaling initiatives and sustaining momentum in sustainability education. This chapter offers actionable insights for other institutions aiming to develop sustainable campus models, while also addressing potential limitations and identifying areas for further improvement.
