ACHIEVE-ing Sustainability Through Strategic and Committed Action: The Case of Mariano Marcos State University
摘要
As a higher education institution (HEI), Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU)‘s commitment to sustainability permeates its core functions pursuant to its strategic agenda, dubbed as the Seven-Point AGENDA to ACHIEVE. MMSU’s sustainability initiatives emanate from its “GREEN University Framework,” built on the pillars of governance, research, education, environment, and networking. MMSU’s journey to becoming a sustainable university was further strengthened by its participation in the UIGreenMetrics (UIGM) evaluation mechanism to measure the extent of the sustainability program and the progress of the university in its undertaking. In the hope of motivating other HEIs to pursue their sustainability plans, this article presents the best practices of MMSU to achieve sustainability through strategic and committed action. It highlights MMSU’s strategies and initiatives including, (1) the MMSU ACHIEVE agenda and the GREEN University Framework, (2) clean and affordable energy and climate change mitigation, (3) sustainable campus environment, (4) digitalization and futures thinking, (5) networking, and 6) measuring and reporting sustainability initiatives. Ultimately, this article highlights how HEIs can integrate sustainability principles into their educational, research, community engagement, and operational functions and leverage innovation and collaboration in order to fulfill their roles as vanguards of sustainability.
