Nowadays, climate change mitigation and ensuring the sustainability of campuses have become a global phenomenon in higher education. The activities carried out by universities to achieve sustainable university goals include reducing carbon footprint, creating climate action plans and waste management. UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is an index that provides opportunities for universities to evaluate themselves in various aspects such as building, energy, water, waste, transport, education, research, etc. in line with sustainability. It is also the first attempt to provide a global ranking of universities’ sustainability behaviors. It offers the opportunity to compare and improve the initiatives that universities have implemented to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at national and international level. It strengthens institutional awareness and motivation through sustainable campus initiatives and annual status assessment. In this study, sustainability initiatives of Düzce University in the preparation process of UI GreenMetric World University Ranking 2023 are discussed. The studies carried out within the scope of sustainability are associated with the 17 SDGs adopted by the United Nations. The data obtained from Düzce University Sustainability and Climate Change Coordinatorship, Accreditation, Academic Evaluation and Quality Coordinatorship and Greenmetric Office studies show that Düzce University is directly related to Articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 13 of the SDGs. Düzce University’s goal of becoming an environmentally friendly university in education, research and contribution to the community is stated in Düzce University Climate Action Plan 2024–2030. In line with the evaluations made, it is recommended to increase social awareness, improve the campus landscape, increase the number of recycling programs, and diversify renewable energy sources in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the university and increase carbon sequestration in order to achieve the Carbon Neutral university target.
