Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a non-pathologising, powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy, which has catapulted its way into the therapy world in the last decade. The IFS model, developed in the 1980’s by Dr. Richard Schwartz, understands the individual mind and larger human systems in new ways, and is developing a growing evidence base and interest from therapists internationally. IFS is based on the premise that people are regularly working from various subpersonalities, which may experience conflict with each other when under stress or dealing with challenges. In short, the IFS model refers to the subpersonalities as parts and uses the metaphor of the individual having an internal family of parts to lay the foundation for a therapeutic intervention.
