Rural communities across the world are highly reliant on livestock for sustenance and income, placing greater importance for community members upon maintaining livestock safety during disaster events. The refusal of the communities to evacuate without their animals highlights the depth of this connection, urging further exploration for holistic disaster management strategies. The bidirectional interaction that humans and their livestock share creates a unique interdependence that shapes disaster resilience and community bonds. This highlights the need for a comprehensive understanding to refine and align current disaster management systems to address challenges faced by animals and their stewards during disasters. This chapter gives an overview of human-animal interactions (HAIs) in Pakistan and the diseases that are common in animals in times of disasters. It undertakes a thorough investigation that covers the provisions for safeguarding agricultural animals during and in the aftermath of disasters through thematic analysis using MAXQDA, with a focus on Pakistan and neighboring countries in South Asia. Such an analysis is valuable in understanding the broader scenario because these policies and strategies often shape community behavior. The analysis shows the ongoing journey toward effective policies, recognizing not only the economic but also emotional dimensions of human-animal interaction. Thus, this chapter concludes with a call for enhanced knowledge synthesis on human-animal interactions in disaster settings.
