Conceptualizing Human-Animal Interactions in the Global Context of Climate Change, Disaster, and Other Crises

This chapter synthesizes disaster and emergency management (DEM) and human-animal interactions (HAIs), situating their intersection within the broader context of climate change and disaster studies. The chapter is structured into six sections. Following the introduction, the second section defines key terms, including hazard, risk, and disaster, and explains their interconnections. It highlights the socially constructed nature of disasters through vulnerabilities embedded in physical, economic, and institutional systems. The section categorizes hazards into natural, technological, and intentional categories, and outlines the DEM cycle consisting of preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation, while also addressing temporal overlaps. Concepts of vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability are introduced as interrelated factors that shape the impact and recovery from disasters within global policy frameworks. The third section outlines foundational HAI concepts by distinguishing between interaction, relationship, and bond, categorizing types of HAI based on the nature of human-animal engagement. It presents One Health and One Welfare as key frameworks linking human and animal well-being, while reviewing the social, health, economic, and political dimensions of HAIs, including both benefits and risks. The fourth section connects HAIs to DEM by examining how animal-related concerns influence human behavior and institutional responses across various hazard types and stages of DEM. It summarizes literature on the documented effects of HAIs across different disaster contexts. The fifth section explores the HAI-disaster nexus, identifies research gaps, and outlines directions for future inquiry. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for integrative and multispecies approaches in disaster research and policy.
