This chapter introduces the notion of cellular automata (CAs). Although this book deals with the one-dimensional CAs, a generalized definition of cellular automaton (CA) is set in the next section. The non-uniform CAs are then defined after formal presentation of the elementary CAs (ECAs) in Sect. 2.2. The foundation of finite CAs is provided in Sect. 2.4. Finally, the hardware implementation of finite CAs are briefed in Sect. 2.5.
