A trailblazing electrical engineer, Edith Clarke’s textbook on circuit analysis of AC power systems was the standard college textbook for years for power engineers. Clarke was the first woman to graduate with an MS degree in electrical engineering from MIT, the first professionally employed female electrical engineer in the USA, the first full-time female professor of electrical engineering at any college in the USA, and one of the first three women to become a fellow of what is today the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Clarke was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her graphical calculator, which was used for decades by engineers planning transmission lines and is the basis for the algorithms in computer programs today. Her patent for the “Clarke Calculator” was one of the three patents that she was awarded. Clarke was honored by the Society of Women Engineers as the 1954 Achievement Award recipient.
