Dr. Irmgard Flügge-Lotz was a notable researcher and author in discontinuous automatic control and fluid mechanics. She is known for developing the Lotz method, a process for calculating the lift of a three-dimensional wing, and for the theory of on–off control systems. Born and educated in Germany, Flügge-Lotz earned her PhD in engineering in 1927. She worked in Nazi Germany until after WWII when in 1948, she and her husband, a civil engineer, joined Stanford University. She published over 50 technical papers. She wrote two landmark textbooks on control systems (Flügge-Lotz 1953; Flügge-Lotz 1968). Flügge-Lotz was recognized in 1970 by the Society of Women Engineers with their Achievement Award. She was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics that same year and was the first woman to give the Theodore von Kármán lecture (1971). Her contributions live on in the world of aeronautics and control systems.
