Hopper is referred to as the mother of computerized data automation in the naval service. Her pioneering computer compilers enabled the computer user to communicate with the computer using human languages, not just mathematical symbols. Furthermore, she loved taking credit for finding the first computer bug—a moth stuck in the relay of a computer. She received many awards and honors in recognition of her efforts during her lifetime, including the Society of Women Engineers 1964 Achievement Award, and numerous awards posthumously.
