Reconstructing Alcohol Sales Distribution in Japanese Supermarkets with an Extended Random Multiplicative Process

In this study, we analyzed large-scale point of sales (POS) data from Japanese supermarkets and demonstrated that the cumulative distribution of alcohol sales follows a fat-tailed distribution. We found that sales growth rates depend on sales size. By incorporating this size dependence into an extended random multiplicative process, we successfully reproduced the sales distribution observed in the data. Our findings highlight the importance of size-dependent growth dynamics in accurately modeling real-world sales distributions. These insights could benefit market analysis and support the development of business strategies.
