Evaluation of Climate Resilient Agriculture Practices in Subcontinent

Agriculture which manifests as the source of livelihoods for communities is greatly affected by these climatic changes in the Subcontinent. This chapter examines the effectiveness of Climate Resilient Agriculture (CRA) practices in overcoming these challenges and promoting agricultural sustainability. Climate change trends in India mainly take the form of moody weather conditions, such as changing precipitation cycle, higher temperature variability and increased frequency of extreme weather episodes. These very patterns adversely affect agricultural productivity and the global food supply. The effect of climate change on agriculture in the Subcontinent is huge and aggravated by the fact that the sector is very vulnerable to climatic changes. It is crucial to detect and rectify the existing limitations in agricultural systems in order to form effective strategies for adapting to climate change. This evaluation is based on a detailed benchmark applying both theoretical approaches and methods in assessing CRA activities. The quantitative methods, like statistical analysis and modelling techniques, are used together with the qualitative methods, such as case studies and expert interviews, to make the evaluation holistic. Criteria include the degree of adaptability of practices as well as their potential for mitigation, economic viability, social acceptance and environmental sustainability. The techniques considered include; sustainable crop rotation systems, intercropping practices, adoption of climate-resilient crop varieties and precision agriculture techniques as resilience enhancers to climate risks. Soil management strategies such as conservation tillage, soil health improvement and organic farming are evaluated for their potential to increase soil resilience. Water management practices such as efficient irrigation methods and rainwater harvesting are re-evaluated to determine how they can help maximize efficient water use. Among the pest and disease management techniques, livestock management strategies, agroforestry systems could address this particular issue within the context of climate resilience. Although the CRA practices have the potential to bring several benefits, there are still some challenges to their widespread adoption that come from the social, economic, policy and institutional factors. Strategies of CRA development involve the introduction of government policies as well as incentives, education initiatives and R&D activities. Subsidies, crop insurance schemes, farmer training programs and research-driven innovations are proposed as ways to increase CRA use. By dealing with these challenges and applying the strategies applicable, the Subcontinent can gain a strong position in its agricultural resilience against climate change to secure food and create sustainable livelihoods.
