As compared to catheter arteriography, computed tomography angiography (CTA) is less expensive and noninvasive and enables three-dimensional visualization of the blood vessels. During CTA, pre-contrast imaging, arterial phase, and venous (delayed) phase are obtained. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), a technique referred to as time-of-flight (TOF), can be performed without the injection of the contrast media. To isolate the flow in the arteries, venous flow enhancement is excluded using saturation bands above the imaging volume and thus saturating the flow from the cranial to caudal direction. Contrast-enhanced MRA is more accurate than TOF MRA. Poor spatial resolution is more common in MRA studies as compared to CTA.
