Rupture of the popliteal aneurysm is extremely uncommon. In patients presenting with an aneurysm rupture, approximately 50% are on anticoagulation and are older than those without rupture. The amputation rate is higher, and the survival rate is lower in patients undergoing repair for a ruptured popliteal aneurysm as compared to those with intact aneurysm. Though endovascular repair is preferable, many patients are not suitable for endovascular repair because of the extremely large size of the aneurysm, tortuosity of the popliteal artery, and poor distal runoff.
