The primary objective for the repair of popliteal aneurysm is the elimination of the aneurysm to prevent acute thrombosis and/or distal embolization. Repair is generally performed using either a medial or posterior approach. A posterior approach is preferred for smaller-sized aneurysms located at the knee joint level. The great saphenous vein is preferred as a bypass conduit. The risk of amputation within 30 days following revascularization in asymptomatic patients is 1.4% with a 1-year patency rate of 96% with the use of a vein graft and 67% with use of a prosthetic conduit.
