Making art and perceiving it is not about object recognitionobject recognition, representationrepresentation, or propositions.propositions Instead, because it is reliant on gistgist perceptiongist perception, peripheral visionperipheral vision, nonconscious perceptionnonconscious perception, affordancesaffordances, and probabilistic cognitionprobabilistic cognition, it is a fluid response to the beliefsbeliefs of others. Because the world comes to each of us solipsistically, our understanding of the world is necessarily a parsed understanding; we are very partial understanders. While the basic mechanism of our epistemological experience is the ability to editedit, sort, and categorize the uncountable number of discrete bits of information, artistsartists in particular are able to experience parts of reality in a direct, un-codified, and nonconceptualizednonconceptualized state. Our bodies have evolved to know how to read low-level featureslow-level features instantaneously and are thus receptive to the non-linguistic attitudesnon-linguistic attitudes and views of others in general. Thus, art is evolutionarily effective as a form of conversationconversation. This is because art is an embodiedembodied form of perceptual conversation that results from consensusconsensus buildingconsensus building and is constituent of the epistemological basisepistemological basis that forms public languagepublic language—a way of conversingconversing with one another that is embodied and not linguistic. ArtArt is a way out of our solipsismsolipsism.
