A Novel Adsorbent Based on Metal Oxide Functionalized Hemp Fibers to Remove Azo Dye and Anti-inflammatory Drugs from Water Effluents
摘要
Water pollution is considered a great problem. Different pollutants can be found in water effluents but, among all, dyes and emerging anti-inflammatory drugs are gaining a certain concern. To overcome the high cost of synthetic adsorbents and their hard regenerability, novel adsorbents based on agro-waste resources should be fabricated. The work focuses on the application of metal oxide functionalized hemp fibres to remove methyl orange (MO) and two anti-inflammatory drugs (diclofenac sodium salt (DSS) and piroxicam (PX)). Several process parameters were varied and their effect on removal efficiency of MO was studied. The data showed that the adsorption approached equilibrium within 20 min for MO and 5 h for DSS and PX. The adsorption efficiency of a 50 ppm initial concentration of azo dye is 99.8%. The Langmuir model greatly fitted the adsorption data with a qm = 338.98 mg/g. Besides, the produced adsorbent showed high selectivity and great adsorption capacity in adsorbing anti-inflammatory drugs (initial concentration 10 ppm) showing a removal efficiency of about 99% for PX and 50% for DSS. So, the potential of a novel green adsorbent in removing several pollutants was demonstrated allowing it to apply in real-life wastewater treatment applications.
