Agriculture is the largest water consumer in all socioeconomic sectors globally. The ever-growing agriculture water demand is a key challenge to water resources management and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions. The search for alternative water supply sources to meet agriculture water demand has been never as crucial as now. The advancement of desalination technology over the last decade attracts the attention of decision and policymakers to utilize desalinated water for agriculture. This paper highlights the status of water resources management in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom’s key achievements since the adaption of the National Water Strategy in 2017 to date, benchmarks the experience and key performance indicators for the use of desalinated water in agriculture globally. Finally, the authors propose a holistic assessment approach to support the decision making process for desalinated water use in agriculture by conducting a comprehensive systematic economic, technical, environmental, and legislative feasibility studies.
