Climate Change Effects on Pesticide Use: Farm Workers’ Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Exposure Safety

Pesticides have been in use for decades to help improve crop production, in terms of quality and quantity, by controlling pests and their diseases. However, their efficiency and use are shaped by environmental factors including increase temperature and elevated CO2 concentrations, which alter photosynthetic activity, plant growth and at the same time enabling dilution pesticide concentration absorbed by plants. Structured pretested questionnaire was used to assess farmers’ personal and environmental safety awareness during pesticide application on farmland. Twenty nine percent of the farmers interviewed worked with pesticide application between 6 to10 years, while 26.7% have handled pesticide during planting season from 11–15 years. Farmers’ knowledge on the impact of pesticide on human health significantly correlate with years of practice experience and highest educational level (<0.001 and < 0.001) while both years handling pesticide on farms and educational attainment related with awareness of the increased impact of pesticides on the environment (0.002 and < 0.001, respectively). Related ill health experienced among the respondents include headache (27.3%), itchy eyes (14.3%), dizziness (12.5%), and skin irritation (10%). These findings highlight the multifaceted nature of pesticide-related health risks among farmers, and raise awareness on the importance of developing and implementing comprehensive training programs that teach climate adaptation strategies, including safety measures, such as the proper and complete use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), also information on different types of pesticides, integrated pesticide management system, safe handling, safe disposing, safe storing of pesticides. Furthermore, there is need to strengthen policy to regulate pesticide use, which will go along a long way to limit farmers access to banned products.
