This chapter examines how Egypt and the broader Orient were portrayed in French periodicals published during the occupation, specifically the newspaper Le Courrier de l’Égypte and the journal La Décade Égyptienne. These publications depicted Egyptian society as lagging behind Europe in terms of progress and development. In contrast, the French were presented in an exceptionally favourable light as bearers of culture with a civilising mission. The images of a rich region, a grateful local population, and the opponents of the French enduring continuous disasters, intentionally formed by the army command in the periodicals, was part of the Napoleonic propaganda intended to encourage the participants of the campaign enduring physical difficulties and harsh disappointment with Egypt.
