This chapter introduces the political and military context of the French invasion and three-year occupation of Egypt, essential background for understanding the intercultural relations that developed during this period. The chapter traces the events leading up to the invasion as well as those that occurred during the occupation. It also focuses on the various forms of Egyptian resistance to French rule—a subject portrayed differently in French and Arabic-language sources.
