The Lumina Accommodative Intraocular Lens
摘要
Accommodative intraocular lenses (AIOLs) provide a shifting single focal spot traveling along the optical axis during accommodation, which mimics natural accommodation. AIOLs such as the Lumina described below do not require neuroadaptation sensu stricto, meaning: do not require rewiring in the brain. None of the earlier AIOLs offered consistent results and were abandoned. The Lumina Accommodative Intraocular Lens (AkkoLens International, The Netherlands) is an AIOL implanted in the sulcus with variable optics based on the Alvarez optical principle. The Lumina comprises an anterior optical element and a posterior optical element with each element comprising a cubic, rotationally asymmetrical “free-form” optical surface with the elements joined by an elastic connection. The elements mutually slide in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis whose movement results in a high-quality variable power spherical lens provided by the combination of the two cubic surfaces fitted onto the two optical elements.
