Provincializing the Human, the Animal: A Proffer for Future Anti-Racism
摘要
The forward-looking argument of this chapter is that the racial and animal questions are deeply entangled, but this is generally not recognized. Consequently, by striving towards ‘humanization’, anti-racist movements involuntarily tap into a Western onto-epistemological framework that presents itself as universal but is in fact situated. Moreover, this framework plays a fundamental role in the modern-colonial construction of race and conterminous processes of racialization. Nevertheless, when the interconnections between race, ‘human’, and ‘animal’ are uncovered and analysed, they can also be a source for rethinking the contours and directions of liberation. Ultimately, it is hoped that these conceptual insights motivate anti-racist movements to reconsider their position on animal matters. A deliberate integration of the animal question into an anti-racist politics would be a sea change, and usher in a new wave of anti-racist politics to come.
