This work explores the enduring impact of war trauma as a child war refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting the complexities of achieving inner peace and reconciliation. Through personal experiences and observations, it documents how historical traumas are transmitted within communities, influencing perceptions of victimhood and interactions decades later. The narrative underscores the importance of addressing intergenerational trauma for long-term peace and reconciliation, emphasizing that “invisible” challenges of healing. It also discusses the inherent risks in peacebuilding, questioning the ethics of asking victims to relive their trauma and forgive their violators. Ultimately, it argues that peace requires deep healing and reconciliation, acknowledging the invisible experiences and traumas that persist long after the fighting stops. Victims of war are often haunted by the ghosts of the past, carrying the weight of traumatic memories that continue to shape their lives and those of their descendants.
