This chapter describes some of the many creation myths that societies handed down through oral histories at first and then written into holy books. Following the paths of humanity'’s migrations, the mythological journey traverses the diverse myths of Africa and then journeys into the Levant and the Near East, where the myths of the Abrahamic religions arose. Creation myths from Europe include the Greek and Scandinavian myths. Myths from Asia and Australia are also described. Then, the odyssey of creation myths moves north and east into India, China, and Japan, before crossing into North America, spreading south to the southernmost tips of Tierra del Fuego. All of these myths have some aspects in common, but the most salient aspect of all of these is that (1) they are local, and (2) they all are relatively recent in origin, likely arising between 5000 and 10,000 years ago.
