If the leadership of the so-called global health system became concentrated in the hands of the G7 countries, this would lead to an impasse in the multilateral public health system. In the light of the obstacles that could arise at multilateral level in the adoption of global solutions, regional initiatives and solutions could provide a response. Negotiations in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) at the World Health Organization (WHO) have emphasized the need for regional solutions. These could include the regional manufacture of vaccines and medical supplies, the creation of regional medicines agencies with sanitary standards that promote regional health and production (the Latin American and Caribbean Medicines Agency (AMLAC—Spanish acronym for “Agencia latinoamericana y del caribe de medicamentos”), proposed by some Latin American countries, or the African Medicines Agency, currently being created), as well as a regional approach to intellectual property standards, using the flexibilities of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
