Secured by Design (SBD) was first launched in 1989 and almost four decades later can authoritatively claim to be the most successful crime prevention initiative in the history of policing—worldwide. Two particular elements point to the reason for this success. First, across the UK it is delivered by police Designing Out Crime Officers. And second, standards, testing and certification lie at the heart of its magnificent development guides. During 2025, two new such guides were published, ones that mark the pinnacle of excellence: Secured by Design Residential Guide 2025; and Secured by Design Non-Residential Guide 2025. A synopsis of each of these two development guides is provided in this chapter. However (and as with all of the guidance featured below) the specific development guide on the SBD website MUST be interrogated to ensure the most accurate and up to date information is obtained.
