Chapter 5 explores the impact on experiences and behaviour of inhabiting a virtual body, observable from outside. This often represents a modified form of an individual’s own body seen through a “virtual mirror”. During instances of what is termed “distributed embodiment,” it can also manifest as a presence in a virtual world through a wholly distinct body that is perceived as being concurrently both one’s own and another’s body (a virtual out-of-body experience). Experiencing existence in a different body can facilitate a shift in one’s worldview, sometimes diminishing prejudices, and transforming the nature of personal experience, as illustrated in the scenario presented early in the chapter. Such experiences offer profound insights into awareness and self-perception, and may also be used to lessen psychological anxieties and delve into hitherto uncharted areas of human experience.

摘要
