Disembodied Social Interaction

Chapter 2 focuses on the origins of the displaced selfdisplaced self, including the technological developments and social processes through which our interactions with other people and sources of information have become separated from our physical locations, the places where our bodies are. We start with a short scenario capturing some key features of interacting as a disembodied being via social mediasocial media, and the kind of dangers that this can bring, specifically, of cyberbullyingcyberbullying. Further into the chapter, we present a second scenario on another form of disembodied interaction, that of social video gaming. These scenarios establish the context for an examination of the challenges, and some advantages, of this type of interconnected existence to our quality of lifequality of life. AnonymityAnonymity, “placelessnessplacelessness,” and a profound association with one’s phone and online existence, often at the expense of other aspects of being a person in the world, are key elements of the discussion.
