According to the literature and anecdotal data, early career teachers often feel unprepared to cope with the realities of today’s classroom, especially in the area of classroom management. Although they typically participate in a series of practicum training throughout their university studies, the usefulness of these experiences varies, as it is dependent upon the quality of the supervising teacher, the make-up and culture of the classroom, and the preparation the student receives prior to these placements. We have identified AI in the form of simulations in mixed-reality learning environments as a possible solution to a lack of preparation and practice in managing challenging classroom behavior. The aims of this chapter are threefold: to briefly review the literature about simulations in mixed-reality learning environments in teacher education; to describe a pilot study at one university that examined the efficacy of these simulations to support pre-service teachers in the development of de-escalation skills; and to discuss practical implications and future directions of this type of AI technology in teacher education.

摘要
