The triad wealth, fame, and social power features a meritocratic society in which people aim at excellence on the basis of their talent, effort, and achievement, rather than social class, descent, or status of their parents. However, living in a meritocratic society has some serious shadow sides. Research data show that rich people with high income and salary actually feel poor. Rising to fame and celebrity means a serious restriction of one’s freedom and privacy. Those who have reached a position of social power, often stay glued to their velvet chair as long as possible, a situation that may change dramatically when they lose their job in a rapidly changing society. These considerations lead to a distinction between “control-oriented leaders” and “great leaders.” Control-oriented leaders strive for power over others, thereby motivated by the urge to protect and strengthen their position. Great leaders are motivated by a mission that contributes to the welfare of society and humanity.
