The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the main belligerent in the military campaign against the Ansar Allah, has been defeated by enemy it sought to neutralize. The massive bombing campaign in Yemen supposedly directed at restoring the ‘legitimate’ government of interim President Hadi has failed in significantly as well. Finally abandoned in 2022 by his Gulf Cooperation Council sponsors, Hadi was forced to give up his Presidential authority the day the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (in Riyadh) was created. Billions of dollars’ worth of military technology and weaponry—including cluster bombs and other illegal incendiaries—were put into this ‘sure win’ conflict, as was great investment in the rhetoric of Ansar Allah as Iranian proxy. In possession of highly advanced military systems and hardware and the logistical expertise of the various states, the Coalition was still unable to defeat Ansar Allah. Indeed, the intervention bolstered the group who are now the de facto power in northern Yemen. The military campaign produced much death and extreme suffering, pushing back development in Yemen by over twenty years. Why was an intervention deemed necessary? How was such an ill-considered mission allowed to happen? Where were the international community and international law during this illegal bombing campaign? Were Ansar Allah really proxies of Iran, or was that justification that led to the destruction of Yemen merely propaganda?
