Potential Use of Flooded Quarries for Tourist Activities at Mining Sites
摘要
This article dwells upon the potential use of flooded quarries formed as a result of mining activities for tourism. The transformation (recovery and improvement) of mining sites including flooded quarries and the adjacent natural complexes shall help revitalize the environment and improve the quality of life of local residents. Open quarry mining creates disrupted and contaminated lands and industrial landscapes that remain even after the extraction of resources finishes. A quarry is a key element in such landscapes, and quarries are gradually flooded with water. Such water bodies alongside with natural and/or man-made green spaces and infrastructure can be used for the implementation of wellness, cultural, educational (in fields of industries and mineralogy), and active tourism including sports. Thus, following recovery, a flooded quarry can become an important resource for the organization of recreational areas, which is especially important for settlements and suburbs.
