In the 1970s, Pittsburgh scholar-activist Dr. Barbara Sizemore spearheaded a successful political effort in Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) to secure a five-person board majority committed to improving outcomes for Black children. Between 2021 and 2023, Black Women for a Better Education (BW4BE) ran school board candidates and ultimately secured a five-member school board majority. The historical throughline between these efforts toward educational activism with a focus on successfully educating Black children was, until recently, intentionally erased. This chapter employs an endarkened feminist epistemology focused on Black women’s ways of knowing to chronicle the divine, ancestral connection between Dr. Sizemore and BW4BE’s work.
