Telepresence Robots and Chatbots in Hybrid Teaching and Learning: A Case of Interdisciplinary Focused Environment
摘要
This chapter examines the implementation of a hybrid teaching and learning course titled “Enhancing Elderly Care Through Telepresence Robots” at Tallinn University. This course was conducted as part of the Learning in Interdisciplinary Focused Environment (LIFE) initiative, a university-wide, six ECTS credit course designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among students from diverse disciplines. The LIFE initiative aims to develop essential general competencies and teamwork skills for addressing complex interdisciplinary problems, promote self-management, practical application of knowledge, and lifelong learning skills. The course departs from traditional subject-based education by encouraging collaboration among students, faculty, and external partners. Through the course, students gain exposure to new learning approaches that broaden and enrich their educational experiences. Mandatory for both Bachelor’s and Master’s students, the LIFE initiative encourages students to collaborate with faculty on interdisciplinary projects of their own interest. Focusing on the “Enhancing Elderly Care Through Telepresence Robots” course, this chapter explores the integration of chatbots, videoconferencing, and telepresence robots (TPRs) into the hybrid learning environment. The incorporation of these technologies enhanced the overall learning experience by providing flexibility for both students and teachers. The chapter outlines the course design, learning goals and competencies, and provides reflections on how these technologies supported student learning.
