Fostering Tourism and Hospitality Students’ Language and Career Skills: A Blended and Hybrid Approach

The following chapter explores the use of a hybrid learning approach to address the importance of career skills and enhance students’ employability. Based on the use of digital portfolios, this approach consisted of a wide set of activities involving job applications and recruitment, combining both online and face-to-face teaching and learning activities. Carried out within the scope English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, these activities are described as part of a wide-ranging teaching and learning strategy, whose key outputs included CVs, emails, personal statements and video pitches, in addition to role-play and simulated activities, aiming to enhance students’ knowledge and career skills. Combining the use of technology-driven learning platforms and interactive classroom experiences, the author draws from a literature review, observation and notes from the field to establish the affordances of hybrid learning within the scope of career skills development and its potential in today’s dynamic and ever-evolving workforce. As a result, in addition to an overall description of activities and their implementation, the chapter includes reflections based on practice, as well as fresh insights on the role language teaching and hybrid learning can play in leveraging experiential learning within the scope of higher tourism education.
